A number of contemporaries have tried to describe the essence of the institution under the enigmatic name \\\"die insel\\\" (the island) - erected in 1955 as home for the educational organisation of the town of Marl. The elegant and open atrium construction was much more than a precursor for the subsequent developments of it\u2019s modern town centre that represented an aspiring industrial town north of the Ruhr region that was nevertheless in the middle of a bare moorland. <\/span>
The building was constructed specifically for the purpose of adult education, the first of its kind after the war. Its fame and glory was however, for the most part due to the spirit in which the institution carried out its work, and in turn shaped daily life in this industrial postwar town. The insel<\/em> united Community college, reading room, and Library under one roof. The construction of this building was financed by the prosperous mining industry of the town but its work was facilitated through the engagement and support of full time staff and most importantly volunteers.<\/span><\/p>

The goal of the institution was to offer the citizens of the town of Marl a place to come together, to receive information on a range of topics, to educate themselves, and to engage in various activities in their free time. It was a goal of the insel<\/em> to encourage the heterogenous population of the town, to be critical and actively engaged with regard to their environment and the media, including television and newspapers, that dominated the cultural landscape at the time. Many of these people included refugees and job-seekers who came in their numbers to find work in the mines and in the Chemical factories after the war. In this spirit learning should be a non-hierarchical process, one that resembles a \u201cround table\u201d where the emphasis is placed on a self driven approach and where each individual plays an equal role. <\/span>

The work comprises of a film titled die insel<\/em>, in which Fari Shams and Arne Schmitt tell their story of this institution and with it the history of adult education in post war Germany using their own film material together with archive material from television, radio and the self produced films of die insel<\/em>. These various sources are brought together through a narrative composed entirely from press clippings found in the chronicles of the insel<\/em>. These press clippings retrace the vital relationships between wealth education, and politics that repeatedly manifest themselves throughout the history of the institution.<\/span><\/p>

The spatial aspects of the work as film within an installation salute the fundamental work of the insel<\/em> in bringing people together within a comfortable environment where a conversation may begin.<\/span><\/p>

Eine ganze Reihe von Zeitgenoss*innen versuchten sich an Beschreibungen jenes Hauses mit dem einfachen und doch r\u00e4tselhaften Namen \u201edie insel\u201c \u2013 errichtet als Heim des Bildungswerkes der Stadt Marl im Jahr 1955. Der elegante und offene Atriumbau war nicht nur Vorbote des kommenden modernen Stadtzentrums einer aufstrebenden Industriestadt im n\u00f6rdlichen Ruhrgebiet, der zun\u00e4chst noch isoliert in einer kahlen Heidelandschaft stand. <\/span>
Er war auch der erste Neubau f\u00fcr die Erwachsenenbildung in der Bundesrepublik nach Kriegsende. F\u00fcr seinen \u00fcberregionalen Ruhm verantwortlich war jedoch vor allem der spezifische Geist der Arbeit, der dieses Geb\u00e4ude pr\u00e4gte und in den industriellen Nachkriegsalltag hineinwirkte. Volkshochschule, Lesesaal und Stadtbibliothek wurden in der insel programmatisch in einem Geb\u00e4ude vereint. Ziel war es, den B\u00fcrger*innen von Marl einen Ort f\u00fcr Bildung und Gemeinschaftlichkeit, zur Informationsbeschaffung und Freizeitgestaltung zu bieten. Ein \u201ekulturelles Stadtbewusstsein\u201c sollte hier entstehen, um es mit den Worten des langj\u00e4hrigen Direktors und Motors Dr. Bert Donnepp zu sagen. Die heterogene Bev\u00f6lkerung \u2013 darunter viele Geflohene und Arbeitsuchende, die nach dem Krieg auf der Suche nach Arbeit in den Zechen und dem Chemiewerk der Stadt zu Tausenden gestrandet waren \u2013 sollte hier angeregt werden, ihrer Umwelt und den Medien im Alltag kritisch zu begegnen und sich so an der Gestaltung der Gesellschaft aktiv zu beteiligen: eine \u201eBildungsdemokratie am runden Tisch\u201c, in der es keine hierarchische Belehrung geben sollte, sondern Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe.<\/span><\/p>

Zentrum der Arbeit ist der Film \u201edie insel\u201c, in dem Fari Shams und Arne Schmitt eigene Filmbilder aus dem heutigen Marl mit Archivmaterial aus Fernsehen, Rundfunk und den an der insel entstandenen Marler Jahresschauen montieren. Verbunden werden die Elemente durch Zitate aus der Presse, die aus der umfangreichen Chronik der insel stammen. Diese zeichnen Bez\u00fcge von Bildung, Politik und Wohlstand nach, die immer wieder in der insel zusammentrafen \u2013 stets den Problemen der Zeit folgend. Hier tauchen auch fr\u00fche Vorboten des Strukturwandels und der sozialen Medien auf, die von den K\u00fcnstler*innen in einer benutzbaren Rauminstallation zur Diskussion gestellt werden.<\/span><\/p>
