It took a virus for things to stop, for us to be forced to stay home and feel under threat not knowing what it is we are faced with. It would have been unfathomable to think that anything could stop the globally relentless pace of human activity. One day it happened. The schools closed. The shops closed. Restaurants, hairdressers and then everything. The roads that were the cause of so much waiting were suddenly free. The air feels gentler and somehow everything is quiet. For the first time in a lifetime there are no appointments, no commitments, no dinners, no deadlines. Everything is temporarily closed.
At first I thought about the second gate in the film, die Unendliche Geschichte where Atreyu is faced with the worse task of all, that of being faced with his true self. \u2018Confronted with their true selves most men would run away screaming\u2019, Engywook says to Falkor. I wondered if this was a chance, if this \u2018order\u2019 to stay home would present each of us with the second gate. For many of us and with thanks to technology this did not happen. Life continues seamlessly online and the creativity to replace each unnecessary encounter with its virtual double is unstoppable. We can be more efficient if we move around less. This is of course good news for the environment but in our haste, are we forgetting something?<\/p>

In my recent works \u2018play\u2019 (and the interaction and collaboration implicit in it) has been the central focus and portrayed as a fundamental pillar of learning and therefore education not just for children but also for adults. Playing requires at least one partner and cannot adhere to a 2m distance rule.

Erst durch das Auftauchen eines Virus kam es zum Stillstand und wir wurden gezwungen zuhause zu bleiben, in dem Gef\u00fchl bedroht zu werden, obwohl wir nicht genau wussten, womit wir es eigentlich zu tun haben. Kaum jemand h\u00e4tte ahnen k\u00f6nnen, dass irgendetwas in der Lage ist, den unerm\u00fcdlichen globalen Puls menschlicher Aktivit\u00e4t zu stoppen. Doch dann ist es passiert. Die Schulen: geschlossen. Die Gesch\u00e4fte: geschlossen. Dann Restaurants, Fris\u00f6re und schlie\u00dflich auch alles andere. Die Stra\u00dfen, auf denen wir sonst so viel Zeit verloren, waren pl\u00f6tzlich frei. Die Luft scheint sanfter und irgendwie ist alles still. Zum ersten Mal im Leben gibt es keine Termine, keine Verpflichtungen, keine Dinner, keine Abgabetermine. Alles ist: vor\u00fcbergehend geschlossen.
Ich musste unmittelbar an das zweite Tor aus dem Buch\u00a0Die Unendliche Geschichte\u00a0von Michael Ende denken, wo Atreju vor die schwerste Aufgabe von allen gestellt wird: seinem wahren Selbst gegen\u00fcberzutreten. \u201eKonfrontiert mit ihrem wahren Selbst liefen die meisten M\u00e4nner schreiend davon\u201c, sagt Engywuck zu Fuchur. Ich fragte mich, ob darin eine Chance l\u00e4ge, ob diese Aufforderung zuhause zu bleiben, uns alle vor das zweite Tor stellen w\u00fcrde. F\u00fcr die meisten von uns, und besonders dank neuer Technologien, ist es nicht dazu gekommen. Das Leben wird online nahtlos weitergef\u00fchrt und wir k\u00f6nnen sogar effizienter sein, wenn wir uns weniger umher bewegen. Das sind nat\u00fcrlich gute Neuigkeiten f\u00fcr die Umwelt, aber vergessen wir in der Eile hier nicht etwas?<\/p>

In meinen j\u00fcngsten Projekten lag mein Fokus auf dem \u201aSpiel\u2018 (und auf der Interaktion und Kollaboration die es impliziert), welches ich als fundamentale S\u00e4ule des Lernens und damit der Bildung sowohl f\u00fcr Kinder als auch Erwachsene, sehe. Spiel ben\u00f6tigt mindestens einen Partner und kann nicht an einer zwei Meter Abstandsregel festhalten.
